Insurance Card?
I never heard of this. My kids have been in accidents and were too distraught to get their insurance cards out of the glove compartment, so they would call me for the information (i.e., policy number, name, etc.) I guess it depends on what insurance company you are covered under. As long as you are paying for coverage regardless if you have the card or not you should be covered.if you have there phone number somewhere in the car, or by calling home to have someone there give it to you, to give to the officer, so he can call them to confirm for himself that your insurance is still active, with most that would be OK" but some officers might impose a small fine for not being able to produce it at the scene.To be honest, I do not know. I have not heard of this. Doesn't mean I know everything either.

I have worked with many governmental agencies from Federal, State & Local. Sometimes they do not know the full status on a reg. or apply the correct regulation to fit the circumstance.

Research It yourself!

Begin by:
Ask the officer what State Law, Regulation, or Vehicle Code makes this possible. Ask for the exact reference number in exacting detail.

Look up the code read it and understand it. Most governmental agencies have offices to help explain their laws, regs & rules to the public.

I usually find most available on the internet.

Pull out your insurance policy and pay special attention to exclusions. Pose the question to your insurance company, agent or broker yourself or by using a friend.

E-mail me should you need further guidance.No, the insurance company cannot refuse to cover you if you do not have an insurance ID card in your car, as long as the policy was valid at the time of the accident. The officer was WRONG. They know nothing about insurance. I tell people all the time, they are not insurance agents so cannot advise you about insurance, I am not a (police officer, car dealer, etc - people who think they know about insurance - fill in the blank) so I can't advise them on their jobs.
People misplace their cards all the time. Call your insurance agent & get another ID card. I get that call daily...
